Joseph, Antonio was born in 1921 in Barchona in the Dominican Republic of Haitian parents. During Trujillo’s massacre of over 10,000 Haitians in 1936, he escaped on foot with his mother, sister and brother to the Haitian frontier. He then apprenticed himself to a tailor and via his trade survived the following years. He was the first person to present himself to the newly opened Centre d’Art early in 1944. His subtle impressionistic painting is excellent and reminiscent of Monet. He continued to grow and mature as a painter.
